G. T. “TOBY” STANSELL

THIS WORLD NEEDS
MORE AUTHENTIC LEADERS. BE ONE.

Authentic leaders use their influence to positively impact and make better the lives of those around them.
Toby Stansell
MEET TOBY
G. T. “TOBY” STANSELL

Toby would never tell you about all the leadership credentials, awards, and accolades he’s accumulated over his career - it’s just not in his nature. He’d rather share with you some of his life experiences that have taught him valuable principles for successful leadership.

As Toby puts it: “Everything life hands us (both good and bad) is an opportunity for us to build a positive, principle-based framework for successful leadership. We are extraordinarily honored to have others put their trust in us and place us in positions of leadership. We are wise to be humble, careful, and considerate as to how we apply the influence our positions offer us to positively impact and hopefully make better the lives of those around us.”

Whether you read his book, listen to him speak, or just engage with him personally - you’ll inevitably learn time-tested truths and principles to help you be a more authentic, successful leader.

“Quit trying to put into people something that's not there. Instead, figure out what God already put in them and pull it out.”
“What can you offer your customers that no one else can, no one else will, or no one else has thought of? That's your crooked wire value.”
“All meaningful and lasting change starts first on the inside and works its way out.”
“Human beings behave and act, not in accordance with the truth, but with the truth as we believe it to be.”
“When you're wrong, don't defend it; deal with it!”
“If what I did yesterday looks BIG to me, then I probably haven't done much today.”
“The mark of a truly intelligent person is that he/she can hold two diametrically opposed perspectives in their mind at the same time and give equal consideration to each.”
“Aspire to be an individual that squashes mountains into molehills rather than someone that makes molehills into mountains.”
“Your greatest weakness is an unprotected strength.”
“Wise people learn from personal experience. Wiser people learn from the experiences of others.”
“Ignorance is curable. Stupidity, on the other hand, is fatal. Make sure you can recognize the difference.”
“Execute to your level of competency.”
“You need to know how to step on people's toes without taking the shine off of their shoes.”
“Never allow someone else's failure be an excuse for your own.”
“Humility is more important than visibility.”
“Life never turns out exactly like you plan it. What you get is not quite what you choose. Plan accordingly.”
“Don't judge other people. All of us have liabilities. Some people's liabilities are just more visible than other's.”
“Talk WITH people, not ABOUT them.”
“All disappointment is a result of unmet expectations.”
“Passion precedes motivation.”
“An individual's level of understanding and expectation is directly related to his/her degree of exposure.”
“An option unconsidered was never really an option at all.”
“No battle plan survives unscathed first contact with the enemy.”
“Execute as quickly as you can without compromising the quality of the outcome.”
“Make it easy for your customer to tell you what you don't want to hear (bad news).”
“Don't look for people who can do the job. Look for people who can get the job done.”
“Ego and anger will blind you to opportunity and will compromise your ability to make wise decisions.”
“People do what you inspect... not what you expect.”
“You can delegate authority, but you can't delegate responsibility.”
“Real leaders do the hard things.”
“You cannot easily evaluate that which you do not measure.”

THE WINDING ROAD TO EXCELLENCE

Leadership Lessons Learned from Life’s Potholes
Drawing on decades of experience leading companies in a variety of sectors, G. T. “Toby” Stansell has written an engaging, often hilarious, practical guide for business leaders intent on leading their businesses to excellence. Leaders all over the world have experienced what they fondly call “Tobyisms,” what Stansell refers to as “mantras for excellence.” The Winding Road to Excellence builds on pithy, memorable mantras like: “Humility is more important than visibility;” “Authentic living precedes authentic leadership;” and “Everyone, from the janitor to the king, deserves to be treated well.” These powerful shorthand ideas are developed and made memorable through engaging stories of how Stansell discovered their wisdom often the hard way. The Winding Road to Excellence is destined to become a must-have desk-side resource leaders will turn to again and again.

“The leadership concepts presented in this book are more than lessons learned through experience, they are truths to be followed. They are universal, timeless, and objective principles that worked yesterday, still work today, and will work tomorrow. They are easy to understand, have broad applicability, and (most importantly) are easy to put into practice. If you’re looking to improve your day-to-day life as a leader, this book provides a well-defined framework for authentic leadership. And there’s no better authentic leader than Toby Stansell to show you the way!”
SCOTT BRAND

“Toby Stansell is a true leader who has the two most important characteristics that a real transformational leader can possess: strong, effective communication and a big heart! Toby believes in teamwork, best practice sharing, and leading by example. Toby makes those around him think, and achieve, more than they thought possible, and continually provide a vision of what can be. I am fortunate to be able to experience Toby's care and commitment as a friend and business associate. I recommend his book with great pleasure!”

One thing that definitely jumps out at you when you meet Toby is that he is incredibly young at heart! He is full of energy, dynamic, and willing to actively engage in development opportunities at various levels. He demonstrates a keen focus on leadership development and stands at the ready to impart his wisdom, all with the unique ability to weave his global exposure into his southern heritage.”
